Temporary Section in the 'Black Band' at Flixton

During the Winter of 1973 a small landslip on the eastern side of the overgrown face of Flixton quarry, TA 039 792, revealed part of the 'Black Band' at the top of the Cenomanian Chalk. Digging exposed the complete section shown below:-

It is interesting to note that the Hull Geological Society visited this exposure in 1898(i) and carried out a fruitless search for the zonal belemnite Actinocamax plenus which is found in the Black Band at Melton Bottoms and in Lincolnshire.
