Humberside Geologist is an occasional publication by the Hull Geological Society. The style of articles ranges from historical to current research, but always relates to Humberside or areas accessible in a day's journey from Hull. Publication takes place when sufficient articles have been received to make a full issue. Issues are free to members, despite the subscription being the lowest of any local society.

Thomas Sheppard forms the main theme of this issue. He was the curator of Hull Museums for many years, a remarkable personality active in many fields, a great publicist and an indefatigable worker. He might be thought of as a product of his generation but he was a type needed in every generation and, fortunately, always to be found however rare. He lived until 1945 and his work and influence are still important over forty years later - surely the measure of the man.

One of the problems of attending a field meeting is the difficulty of remembering details later. We have tried to help in this issue by including accounts of three meetings, which can also be of great assistance when planning a future private visit. It would be gratifying if the publication of these articles were to encourage more members to attend our summer meetings - transport is never a problem. Please come!

Kenneth Fenton died in October 1985. He was then the Society's Vice-President, and had previously served as Secretary and President. He and George de Boer were instrumental in rescuing the Society 25 years ago, and Ken's tireless interest helped to maintain and strengthen it to the present. The next issue will include articles about him and his work. His geological interests are to be remembered by a series of ten Kenneth Fenton Memorial Lectures given annually during the Society's winter programme.
