Common urban rocks -

(a work in progress)

Gneiss

gneiss

A Gneiss (pronounced 'nice') is a metamorphic rock; it has been subjected to great heat and pressure within the earth. The minerals have formed light and dark layers. New minerals such as garnets have grown in the rock. It may have been subjected to folding. So we get a very pretty rock ( "that's nice" as I would say). Most gneisses you will see being used for modern gravestones are imported and in my opinion although very attractive the patterning does detract from the descriptions.
