Obituary
Herbert Barrie Heaton, 3rd December 1932 to
24th April 2021
Barrie Heaton was born in Skipton and educated at Bradford Technical College. He moved from Manchester in 1960 to Little Weighton when he took up a post at British Aerospace in Brough, eventually becoming the Head of the Metallurgy Department until he retired aged 60.
Barrie Heaton joined the Hull Geological Society in 1995
and was an active member for many years. He was our Treasurer from 2002 to 2010,
Vice President from 2010 to 2012 and President from 2012 to 2015. Barrie was
elected as an Honorary Life Member of the Society in 2017.
He was also an active member of the East Yorkshire RIGS
Group, becoming its Secretary in 2004, a post he held until its merger with the
Hull Geological Society in December 2016. He attended some of the National RIGS
conferences on behalf of the Group and liaised with local councils about
planning permissions and conservation of sites.
Over the years Barrie led field trips for the Society to
Cayton Bay, Dugdale, Huggate, Nidderdale, North Cave Wetlands, Wetwang and the
Holderness coast. Barrie also presented talks to the Society at our Members’
Evenings and a lecture about “a run along the Humber Banks”.
