Geology field guides and walks

Disclaimer – details about parking and facilities may have changes since the author last visited these sites.

Note all sites are best visited on a falling tide. For some the tide is critical either to view the site or to avoid getting stranded. You are recommended to wear a hard hat when examining cliffs.

Summary -

Selwicks Bay

Conservation status - SSSI

Parking – pay and display near the lighthouse

Facilities – public toilet and a cafe

Access – steep grassy slope and then steps.

Beach – gravel and wave cut platform

Hazards – wave cut platform can be a bit slippery when wet. Do not get trapped in a sea cave or on far ledges by incoming tide.

Safety and PPE – hard hat and sensible clothes. Sensible footwear; wellies for rock pools.

Geological highlights – boundary between Burnham and Flamborough Formations of the Chalk; minor folding and faulting; major fault with calcite; sea stack.
