Geology in the Graveyard and Cemetery

Rock in the Cemetery

Graveyards and Cemeteries are good places to go to see rocks. We can see a variety of exotic rocks used as gravestones. Also because the stones are dated we can study the effects of weathering on the different types of rock.

Weathering on a Sandstone gravestone: layers of the rock are peeling off.

This Sandstone gravestone is so badly weathered that you cannot read the inscription after 100 years.

A Victorian "draped urn" monument.

Portland Stone - used for the memorial for the people killed in the R38 Airship disaster of 1921 in Western Cemetery.

Many of these pictures are taken in Spring Bank Cemetery, Hull, East Yorkshire, UK.
