Hull Geological Society
It is most pleasing to see that the Society continues to
fulfil its aims through educational lectures and meetings for members, training
in geological techniques, group research projects (which might now be called
“citizen science”) and public events to share our chosen science with others. We
have held four lecture meetings, one Members’ Evening, one Quiz Night, three
Rock and Fossil Roadshows, seven field meetings (including two for Yorkshire
Geology Month and one mapping in the Newbald area), one conservation visit to
Rifle Butts SSSI, one microfossils workshop, one picnic and 8 Club Nights. Our
first Roadshow to be held in Driffield went well; the sale of “luck dip”
specimens, cakes and teas covered the cost of the room hire.
There were also some Bisat Research Group field meetings.
When Graham Kings and Rodger Connell presented their report in January they
informed us that over the last five years the Group had taken more than 1500
photographs of the cliffs from Sewerby to Spurn. The next part of the project is
to log the stratigraphy at selected locations.
Five new members and two new family members have joined
the Society and we awarded the Felix Whitham Memorial Medal to Lewis Rose for
his work on the geology collection at Hornsea Museum.
Looking ahead we are planning five events for
Yorkshire Geology Month which is now in its 16th year and is being organised by
Paul Hildreth. We have decided it is to make an accurate record of Skipsea
Withow Mere as it has change considerably since we published the report in
Humberside Geologist.
On behalf of the Society I thank the Geology
Department at Hull University for hosting our indoor meetings, all our guest
speakers, the Committee members and meeting organisers. I also thank the members
for supporting our events and for their generous donations that help to fund our
activities.
