Hull Geological
Society
Secretary's Annual Report for
1987-1988
Until the recent bad news about the University and the Museum, the Society
had been having a successful year. I do not propose to comment on these events
further*.
The Society has held five field meetings, five lecture meetings and one
enjoyable Members' Evening. The Society has also exhibited displays f its
history and research at meetings of the Yorkshire Geological Society and
Association of Teachers of Geology held in Hull. The Chalk Project has
continued to make steady progress and work has been started on the writing
up. Members have continued to report boulders to the East Riding Boulder
Committee. Also Humberside Geologist number 6 has been published.
Membership stands at 77 ordinary and family members and 7 honorary members,
but the Treasurer plans to remove members in arrears from the list in the
summer.
Looking ahead the plans for the Centenary Dinner and Symposium are well
underway. It is hoped that the Symposium will be an informal and friendly event.
I would like to thank the Committee and Officers for their help during the
year; in particular Tony Gear who has to retire from the Committee due to family
problems after 10 years. Also I wish to thank Ann Emery and Jean Harrison for
help with the printing and the Centenary organisation respectively. Thanks are
also due to the field meeting leaders and guest lecturers for giving us their
time. Lastly, on behalf of the whole Society, I wish to thank the Geology
Department for their continued help, hospitality and support.
* notes - the closure of the Geology Department at the University of Hull
had been announced and there were problems at Hull Museum with staff illnesses
and shortages.
