Hull Geological Society
It is time to take a look back at the last year, review
where we are and look forward.
Since our last AGM we have had one conservation visit to
Rifle Butts SSSI, two Roadshows, ten field meetings, eight club nights, five
guest lectures and one Members’ Evening. Following the closure of the East
Yorkshire RIGS Group the Society has taken on responsibility for designating and
monitoring the sites and we received the donation of their funds into our
Conservation Fund.
It has to be acknowledged that the number of members in
the Society is declining; this seems to have started when the University ended
the night classes. This could be a cause of concern in some eyes, but does it
really matter if we are enjoying ourselves? The finances look good, so we can
afford to keep our membership fees at a steady low price. We are grateful the
efforts of our Treasurer help with that and the donations of members and people
attending our Roadshows.
I have realised that this will
be the 130th Anniversary of our Society so it would be nice to mark
that in some way. It has also been about 25 years since the erection of the
shelter at Rifle Butts SSSI; I must admit that it has lasted longer than I
thought it would and definitely has help protect the exposure from weathering.
Looking ahead we have some
events for Yorkshire Geology Month, which is now in its 14th year.
There will be three Roadshows this summer (we have changed the date of one of
them because it clashed with a wedding in Windsor). There are some Club Nights
in the pipeline and field meetings are being planned. I have had some meetings
with senior staff in the School of Environmental Sciences at the University and
discussed possibilities for closer collaboration.
I would like to offer thanks on behalf of the Society to
the Officers and Committee; in particular to Chris Leach who is standing down as
President after his second term of office. We are grateful for the hospitality
and continued support of the Geology and Geography Departments at the
University. Thanks are also due to our guest speakers at the winter meetings. Of
course I thank all the volunteers who keep the Society going by leading field
trips, organising events and contributing to our meetings and all our guest
speakers.
