Hull Geological Society
During the last year eleven new members joined the
Society. We seem to have been pretty busy too – there have been two Roadshows,
six evening lectures, five field trips, eight Club Nights, one Quiz and at least
six Bisat Research Group field meetings. Two Roadshows were cancelled by the
hosts. We are looking forward to awarding the third Whitham Memorial Medal at
the AGM.
This last year has seen some changes to the Society. We
changed the subscription year and gave members 3 months free membership. We
closed the Microscopy Section due to poor attendance at meetings. However the
Club Nights are still very popular.
We have also realised that the active members East
Yorkshire RIGS Group are all HGS members so decided that it would make sense to
merge the two organisations; hence the proposal on the AGM agenda.
I record with sadness that two active members passed away
this year. Derek Gobbett, who was a regular contributor to our fieldwork
projects and an editor of our journal, died in December aged 84. We thank
Derek’s family for giving us permission to publish some of his unfinished local
research. Jean Harrison who joined the Society in 1963 and was elected as an
Honorary Life Member in 2013 died in January aged 89 and our thoughts are with
Ron who is now living in a care home.
On behalf of the Committee I wish to record our special
thanks to Barrie Heaton, Ros Perry & Anna Kirk-Smith who are standing down from
our Committee at the AGM. Also thanks go to all the speakers, Committee and
embers for their help during the last year – without the hard work by our
volunteers the Society would not exist. We also thank our colleagues at the
University for their hosting our indoor meetings and their continued support.
