Hull Geological
Society
Secretary's Annual Report for
2012-2013
During the year 13 individuals
and two families have been elected to membership of the Society. The membership
currently stands at a total of 107 individual, family, institutional and
honorary members.
Over
the year we have held several meetings:- 4 field meetings, 3 Quaternary research
field trips; 3 roadshows, 9 microscopy evenings, 6 lecture meetings, one three
day conference, one conservation visit to Rifle Butts and a New Year’s picnic.
Two events had to be cancelled due to unforeseen circumstances or bad weather.
The
conference was jointly held with the Yorkshire Geological Society and the
Department of Geography and attracted professional and academic sedimentologists
from the USA and Europe as well as the UK, producing a nice mix with amateurs
from the HGS and YGS. It also gave the HGS the opportunity to showcase some of
our recent research.
I
find it pleasing to see such a variety of events and am looking forward to the
new Club Nights. The one thing that forever impresses me is the way members are
always keen to share their knowledge with others – that is the true spirit of
amateur science.
On
behalf of the Society I wish to thank – the Officers and Committee, our guest
speakers, the field trip leaders, our Publicity Officer and Web-site Editor,
members who displayed specimens at the conference and helped with the catering,
members who displayed specimens at the Roadshows and were our “experts” who
identified specimens for the public, and the Geography Dept for hosting our
meetings.
In
particular we thank Paul Hildreth who is retiring from our Committee after
taking on the role of YGS Secretary. Paul has joined the Committee in 1999 and
was Vice President from 2003 and then President until 2009.
Looking
ahead we have our 125th
Anniversary year. Our first ever meeting was on June 1st
1888 and the first field trip was to Kelsey Hill. So 125 years to the day we
will hold a celebratory meeting and two weeks later a visit to Kelsey Hill. It
will give us the opportunity to remember members from the past and their
contributions to the Society and our science, as well as reviewing our current
understanding of local geology.
The
YGS are not coming to Hull this year for a joint meeting, but we do hope that
YGS members will come to our Anniversary meeting. We have made a proposal for an
interesting and unusual joint meeting for 2014.

May I make a request on behalf of the Treasurer for members to pay their annual
subscriptions promptly next year using the subscription form we send out? It
would make things run much more smoothly. Like all the Committee members, the
Treasurer is a volunteer so please do help. Members can also pay your
subscription to the Assistant Treasurer.
