Hull Geological
Society
Secretary's Annual Report for
2009-2010
This year 9 individuals and families joined the Society. There are at present
about 111 members, of which four are honorary and three are institutions.
This has been a year of changes to the Society. Janet Binns retired from
providing the catering for our October joint meetings with the Yorkshire
Geological Society. Chris Blackhurst retired as publicity Officer and is handing
over to Paul Richards. Barrie Heaton retires as Treasurer and is handing over to
Ian and Nina Scott; Barrie will take over the role of Vice-President from Chris.
Gordon Binns has resigned from the Committee. On behalf of the Society I thank
them all for their efforts and help. Dr Felix Whitham died and we miss him
greatly.
Over the year we have run two Roadshows, two field meetings for Yorkshire
Geology Month, one boat trip (that was postponed twice due to bad weather),
three research field trips, four other field meetings and eleven microscopy
evenings; and in the winter we had six indoor lecture evening meetings and one
joint afternoon meeting with the YGS and the Geography Department.
The year has seen greater co-operation with the Treasure House in
Beverley and an increased interest in the Quaternary of our region.
Unfortunately there has been some more geovandalism at Rifle Butts SSSI and we
hope to meet the new site warden to discuss the situation.
Looking ahead we have some field trips planned in memory of Felix Whitham
- visits to some of his favourite sites. And we have some workshops planned for
the winter. It would be nice if we could publish Humberside Geologist
this year - so could members please send in some contributions?
So even though the membership numbers are declining slightly and the
income from our investments has decreased due to the present low interest rates,
I think that we are still a very active society that offers good value to the
membership!
On behalf of the Society I thank all the speakers and leaders of field
trips for their time and efforts; I thank the Committee for their support - they
are all volunteers and the Society is most grateful for the time they put into
our events; I thank the Geography Department at the University for their
continued hospitality and co-operation.
Lastly, I thank the members of the Society for their continued support of
our meetings and charitable aims.
Mike Horne, March 2010.
