Hull Geological
Society
Secretary's Annual Report for
2006-2007
This year fifteen people and families have joined the Society. There are at
present about 122 individual, family, overseas and institutional members. So the
membership is remaining steady.
During the year we published
Humberside Geologist number 14. This was the first time that we have
published in three different formats - print, CD-ROM and the world wide web -
with in some instances three slightly different versions of the same article. I
thank my fellow editors for their help in producing this biggest ever edition,
which also saw the inclusion of colour photographs for the first time. We are
grateful to all the authors for their articles and to Singleton Birch for
sponsoring number 14.
This year we have held six lecture meetings, a public lecture (attended
by 55 people), a joint lecture meeting and workshop with the Yorkshire
Geological Society (attended by about 50 people), seven events for Yorkshire
Geology Month 2006, six field trips, one research field trip, one barbecue and
eight microscopy evenings. We thank
the speakers, organisers and leaders of these meetings; Janet Binns and family
for the catering at the GS meeting; and are grateful to the Geography Department
at the University and Hull Museums for hosting our lecture meetings.
We have also helped the Treasure House in Beverley create a geology
display and start a geological collection. The display is now open and I hope
that this is the start of an ongoing relationship that is mutually beneficial.
This AGM we see the resignation or retirement of some Committee members.
Felix Whitham has been a committee member for 42 years and was our Treasurer for
a lot of that time. Nigel Whittington created our web-site and
Humberside Geologist Online as well
as being our Publicity Officer for the last 7 years. Derek Gobbett joined the
Committee two years ago, but now lives closer to Scarborough and is involved
with the newly formed Rotunda Geology Group. Lynden Emery retires as an editor -
he has helped to edit or been involved in the production of
Humberside Geologist from the first
volume. On behalf of the Society I thank them all for their contributions to the
Society over the years.
