Hull Geological
Society
Secretary's Annual Report for
2004-2005
It has been a busy year for the Society.
We ran nine field trips in the summer, one of which was held jointly with
the Yorkshire Geological Society. These included the worst attended meeting
(only the leader) and 2nd best attended (about 200 people) that I can remember.
There were also a joint field meeting with the East Yorkshire RIGS Group, two
research field meetings to Flamborough, and a microscopy day-school.
We also started to hold monthly microscopy evenings, which have attracted
an average of 4 members to each meeting, with 8 attending the December one.
These are really friendly and relaxing meetings, which offer the opportunity to
do a bit of research and share our finds and experiences with others.
We have held six winter evening lecture meetings, unfortunately one of
the speakers cancelled because she had lost her voice, but hopes to rearrange
another date for the next winter programme.
We also held an afternoon meeting on 'Glacial Landforms' jointly with the
Yorkshire Geological Society, with our members displaying specimens for our
visitors.
I would like to thank the Society for supporting Yorkshire Geology Month
in May this year. So far 65 individuals and organisations have agreed to support
YGM2005 and we have details of 39 events - with events for the York and
Scarborough areas still to be finalised. There are ten events planned for East
Yorkshire. We have not been able to raise the grants that we had hoped for
towards the costs, but things seem to be running well.
I wish to thank Barrie Heaton, Derek Gobbett, Nigel Whittington and Stuart Jones
for leading events. And I hope that members will lend a hand at the Roadshows at
Hull and Hornsea Museums.
During the year we have received a donation of a set of UK seabed maps
from the late E G Smith of the BGS, as an addition to out Library. If members
wish to borrow these or any other publications please contact our Librarian
Stuart Jones.
We have received more articles for
Humberside Geologist and I am grateful to the editors for their work
proof-reading and editing submissions. We are a bit behind with our plans to put
number 15 into print. I did notice three citations for
Humb. Geol. when looking up some
local geologists in the new Dictionary of
National Biography, which made me feel rather proud of our journal!
This year seven individuals and one family joined the Society. Lynden
Emery and Matt Stephens have resigned from the Committee and I thank them for
their contributions to the running of the Society.
On behalf of the Society I thank the Geography Department for their continued
support and hospitality; our guest speakers for the lectures; our field trip
leaders for the field trips; Janet Binns for the cakes for the October afternoon
meeting; Paul Richards for his work on the computerisation of out past
publications; Stuart for his Library skills; Nigel for continuing to maintain
our website; Barrie for looking after the funds and helping me keep track of
membership records; retiring President David Hill; and the Committee for their
hard work during the year. The next year looks like it will be even busier - let
us hope that it is equally as successful as this one!
