Hull Geological
Society
Secretary's Annual Report for
2003-2004
The Society has had another busy year. There have been six indoor meetings,
including a Members' Evening. Members of the Society also participated in the
Hull meeting of the Yorkshire Geological Society, with displays and the
refreshments. We have also had fifteen other events, some jointly with other
Societies. These included a workshop with the Geologists' Association, a weekend
for the Hertfordshire Geological Association, a field trip for the Huddersfield
Geology Group, a collecting trip for the University's Science Club, a Roadshow
at the Museum, two beginners' events organised with East Yorkshire Council and
our own field trips.
We have also been getting involved in research - with urgent visits to
North Cave to record details in old gravel pits before they were flooded to form
a Wetlands Nature Reserve, as well as investigations of the karst features at
Newbald. The Wetlands research is nearly complete and we hope to publish the
details soon.
Some members are also involved in a project to make the Society's past
publications available on CD-ROM, with a selection of articles going on to our
web-site.
It is with sadness that I report the deaths of Trish Hugill in February
and Donald Beveridge on 20th March*. Donald was a Committee member for many
years, a past Vice-President and played a huge part in the design and
construction of the shelter at Rifle Butts SSSI.
I wish to thank field trip leaders, Committee and Officers for their help
during the year. In particular I thank Richard Myerscough who is standing down
from the Committee after 25 years (at least). Richard has asked me to pass on
his "thanks
to Hull Geol. Soc. for all the years of enjoyment and knowledge." And I am sure
that we all hope that Richard will continue to lead field trips for us and
participate in our activities in the future.
On
behalf of the Society I would also like to thank all of our guest speakers, the
Geography Department at the University for their continued hospitality and
support, and Janet Binns for her splendid cakes provided for the YGS meeting.
Mike Horne, 24th March 2004.
* Donald's funeral is on Friday at 11-00 am at All Saints Church, details
in tonight's Hull Daily Mail. There will be a card at the AGM on Thursday
evening to send our condolences to Jean and family, if you wish to sign it.
