Photographic Exhibition 2014
Hull
Geological Society, Hull School of Art and Design and Yorkshire Geological Society
for their meeting on Saturday 11th October at Queen's Gardens, Hull, about "Geology
and Art". The exhibition will on display to the public from in October
2014.
The closing date for the submission of entries
was 29th September. 60 photographs were submitted. 22 were selected by the judges
for display.
The photographic exhibition
was open to the public from Thursday 9th October until Friday 31st October in
the Hull School of Art & Design Foyer Gallery.
At the event
the prizes were awarded for the "Aesthetics of Geology" photographic competition.
Sixty photographs had been entered and a panel of judges (Alison Field and David
and Jean Hill) selected twenty two for display and awarded prizes. Fraser Briggs
and Matt Hopper,the curators of the display, also selected one photograph for
a prize and the delegates at the meeting voted to select the winners of the
"peoples' prizes".

The
prizes awarded by the judges (Alison Field and David and Jean Hill) were -
- One
year’s free membership of the YGS - Karel De Pauw – "Morning Glory"
- One
year’s free membership of the HGS and a copy of the Humberside Geologist -
Mark Terry – "Untitled (South Ferriby)"
- Hull
School of Art prize of a printed and framed image of their choice - Patrick
Boylan - "Uspallata"
- Yorkshire
Rocks and Landscape and Northumbrian Rocks and Landscape donated by the YGS
- Ursula Lawrence – "Under Pressure"
The
prize awarded by the Curators (Fraser Briggs and Matt Hopper) was - A copy of
Yorkshire Geology and a collection of fossils donated by Mike Horne - Peter
Mathews
The
"Peoples' Prizes" voted for by the delegates were -
- 1st
prize of a 25 pound book voucher donated by the Hull Geological Society -
Karel de Pauw - "Spiralling Sediments".
- 2nd
prize of a 10 pound book voucher donated by Barrie Heaton - Anna Kirk-Smith
- "Dixcast Stream Sark"
- 3rd
prize of two geological encyclopaedias donated by the Hull Geological Society
- Ursula Lawrence.
GUIDELINES
FOR ENTRY
- Entrants
can enter up to 3 submissions.
- The
photographs must be printed and up to A3 size, and may be mounted and /or
framed in a neutral colour. Alternatively they may be submitted electronically
in JPEG format (at least 1MB file size per image and with a resolution of
at least 300dpi please) on a CDROM or by e-mail. They must be original work
and be accompanied by a signed submission form. Printed photographs must have
your name and the title written on the back and electronic submission must
have your name and title in the file name e.g. Smith-Mudrock.jpg
- Submissions
must be received before 29th September 2014 (1st September for digital submissions).
- The
organisers cannot accept responsibility for entries lost or damaged in the
post and cannot guarantee that all delivered or online submissions will be
exhibited.
- The judges'
decision is final and no correspondence will be entered into.
- Judges
may also exhibit photographs but these will not be eligible for prizes.
- The Hull
Geological Society or Yorkshire Geological Society (both registered charities)
reserve the right to use the photographs in their publications, on line and
in promotional material. However, copyright remains with the photographer
and a credit will be provided.
- Entrants
should indicate if they are professional photographers, artists or geologists.
- We regret
that entries cannot be returned unless accompanied by an s.a.e. and appropriate
packing, or they can they be collected from the School of Art and Design
between 3rd & 7th November 2014.
