Hull Geological Society
A brief introduction.

Founded in 1888

Now registered as an Educational Charity.

Aims:- to promote the understanding of and research into geology, particularly in out local region - East Yorkshire, the north Yorkshire coast and north Lincolnshire.

Activities:-

Winter :-
A series of monthly lectures. Five are on a Thursday evening usually at the Geography Department of the University of Hull. The March meeting includes the Annual General meeting. One is on a Saturday afternoon and is special public lecture and is often held in the Ferens Art Gallery, in Hull. Every other year one of the winter meetings is a "Members' Evening' where members give talks or exhibit specimens.

Summer :-
A series of field meetings in our region. Usually on a Saturday or Sunday, led by members of the Society. Sometimes short walks in the evening in June or July. There is usually a trip by minibus to somewhere further afield. There are also some special events for the public, particularly during Science Week, such as walks in the city centre of Hull, visits to cemeteries, walks on the Holderness coast and a "Rock Mineral and Fossil Roadshow".

Conservation :-
The Society has adopted Rifle Butts SSSI near Market Weighton, and we regularly visit it to keep the exposure tidy for the public. We are affiliated to and play an active role in the East Yorkshire RIGS Group. We have a small conservation fund, which is used for the upkeep of the shelter at Rifle Butts SSSI and other geo-conservation in East Yorkshire.

Publications :-
In the past the Society has published Transactions of the Hull Geological Society and East Yorkshire Field Studies. It now Publishes Humberside Geologist. The latest editions of Humberside Geologist are available on the World Wide Web. Preference is given to articles about the geology of our region (and the people who study it) and need not be formal scientific research.

Membership :-
open to anyone. Most are amateurs. Experience varies from complete beginners through to University Professors, but all with an enthusiasm for rocks, fossils and minerals. Members receive:-Three mailings per year and Humberside Geologist free of charge.
There is also an e-mail newsletter for members and "friends" of the Society.

We are affiliated to the Geologists' Association, Yorkshire Geological Society and East Yorkshire RIGS Group, and members may attend their meetings.

Annual membership fees: eight pounds, tenpounds for families or institutions, six pounds for retired members and three pounds for students and job seekers (in 2015). Donations are always welcome.

Help to others -
We can offer advice to individuals or groups interested in local geology. Some members of the Society offer night classes or weekend classes via local colleges and Universities. We can lead walks for groups interested in finding out more about their environment. We can help organise or lead trips in our region for other geological societies and would like to visit their local area too. We might be able to provide speakers for other local organisations. But we are amateurs, so we may not always be able to help other groups and may not be very fast at answering queries. We can also place enquiries on our web-site notice board.
