Understanding geological maps
The journey from Hull to North Cave and Newbald.
"Understanding geological maps". Field trip from Hull through Cottingham, Skidby, Little Weighton to South Cave. Visit South Cave Station Quarry, North Cave Wetlands, Sands Top Quarry (Newbald) and Rifle Butts Quarry. 26/2/2005
Along the way, travelling by car, we made GPS readings of some changes in slope, to be later plotted on a map to see how they coincided with changes in the geology. These readings would have been more accurate if travelling by foot.
These changes in slope may be related to - climbing over the line of the buried cliff at Cottingham, travelling over the Chalk Wolds, descending the Chalk scarp, travelling over the scarp and dip slopes of the Jurassic beds to North Cave, and then back up the sequence towards Newbald.
Observations in blue added from fieldwork on 12th March 2011.
To me the significant readings were -
TA03563318 - change of slope going uphill on Harland Way.
TA02713368 - slope levelling off at top of hill.
SE93113175 - slope down hill to South Cave
SE91743308 - up slope on A1034
9154 3370 - flattens off - turn left to North Cave
9124 3359 - lay by - soil in field very flinty also contains erratics of orange sadnstone, jasper and rounded quartz.
9115 3354 - next field - large blocks of buff oolite containing oysters and belemnites; local farmer said they were moved to the edge of the field. Also some corroded belemnites found in sandy soil.
91333363 - down slope
91903353 - bottom of dip
90964438 - down slope
90783341 - bottom of dip
90583333 - down slope
90393325 - level
90283319 - down steepish slope
90003310 - level; note - we went over a stream after the right turn at the church
88453397 - up steep slope
99723407 - top of slope level.
8847 3315 - octagonal hide at North Cave Wetlands with view to north east of gravels in abandoned quarry face
This will be illustrated with a map in the class.
